A Long Road to Launch
The complete chronological history of Mewgenics' development journey
Team Meat (Edmund McMillen & Tommy Refenes) announced Mew-Genics as their follow-up to the massively successful Super Meat Boy. McMillen described it as the "strangest project" he had ever worked on—a unique blend inspired by Pokémon, The Sims, Tamagotchi, and Animal Crossing. The game promised a deep cat breeding simulation with strategic elements.
Team Meat EraA playable demo was showcased at PAX East in Boston, giving fans their first hands-on experience with the game. The demo featured the breeding mechanics and some basic gameplay elements. Development was reportedly ambitious, with the scope of the project continuously expanding as new ideas were implemented.
Team Meat EraAfter years of development struggles and feature creep, Mew-Genics was officially put on "indefinite hold"—effectively cancelled. The project had grown too ambitious, and the team couldn't find a way to bring it together cohesively. Edmund McMillen eventually departed from Team Meat due to divergent creative interests, moving on to focus on other projects like The Legend of Bum-bo.
Project CancelledIn a surprise announcement, Edmund McMillen revealed he had reacquired the rights to Mewgenics. Even more exciting—he announced a complete reboot of the project with Tyler Glaiel, the talented programmer behind games like The End is Nigh and Closure. The game would be completely redesigned from the ground up with a fresh vision and new technology.
RebootedAfter extensive prototyping, the team experimented with various gameplay styles including brawler and real-time strategy versions. Ultimately, they settled on the turn-based tactical roguelike design that defines the final game. This decision allowed the breeding mechanics to shine while adding deep strategic combat that rewards careful planning.
Development ContinuesThe official trailer premiered at the PC Gaming Show, revealing the full scope of the rebooted game. Critics who played early builds praised it as one of the most exciting roguelites in years. Edmund McMillen called it "the best game of his career." A confirmed release date was finally announced, sending excitement through the gaming community.
